So earlier this year, my parents gave me a blank graphic novel. Exciting, right? Originally, I had an idea for the story that was sort of like Warriors, but underground.
The story followed a young barn cat named Smoky, who had just lost his mother and went out into the world on his own. After an encounter with another cat (who was later going to be the villain), he is saved by a plucky Abyssinian named Amber. Amber takes Smoky to an underground lair located under a shed. He was later was going to make friends with a tabby named Ragtag and a shy tortoiseshell named Hummingbird (who I planned on making the love interest).
Thing is, I had the beginning and a fraction of the middle and the end, and I really couldn’t formulate anything else. So, it really couldn’t have been the graphic novel I wanted it to be. I have some concept art (that’s been in my backpack for a bit. Forgive the wrinkles, and ignore the sidenotes.)
From top to bottom, left to right, we have Smoky,
Cinnamon Amber, Winter, Hummingbird, Highclaw Constellation (who was going to be the leader), Ragtag, and Smoky’s mother, who dies in the very beginning.
It would have been a good story, but…well…
Anyway, I’m working on a new story for the graphic novel. I’ve pencilled in up to page 4, and written a script up to page 35. For now, the story is a secret, so those of you who do know what it is, DO NOT SPILL THE BEANS.
In the words of David Bowie, “I can’t give everything away.”
To distract you, how about an amazing song that St. Vincent did for the soundtrack of Pete’s Dragon?
