2018

Whew.

The past 2 or so years have both been dumpster fires, and that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Mostly 2016, but you know what I mean.

giphy.gif

And this year?

Weeeell…I wouldn’t quite go so far to say that it was good, but it was less of a dumpster fire. You get my drift?

I’d be lying if I said that 2018 was easy. I had to face many daunting obstacles, make some difficult transitions, and come to terms with some truths about myself. But you know what? I managed to overcome those challenges, and I bet that you were able to do the same with yours. But if we look past all that we’d like to forget about this year, parts have been pretty awesome. I got to have so many new and wonderful experiences (Chicago, Sequoia National Park), discovered LOADS of new and spectacular books (some notable 2018 releases included Heart of Iron, Thunderhead, Honor Among Thieves, A Conspiracy of Stars, The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik, and a few others), some amazing films (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, The Crimes of Grindelwald, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Antman and the Wasp, and I haven’t seen Aquaman but I’ve heard that it’s great), incredible music (Lush, Twin Fantasy, etc.) and much more. Of course, we’ve had some not-so-great moments in those respects (The Light Between Worlds, Venom, etc.), but overall, it’s been alright. And regardless of what kind of year we had in 2018, we’ve got a lot to look forward to in 2019.

I saw a meme the other day that was kind of hopeful, however silly it was.

2019-will-be-a-great-year-because-2016-sucked-and-38762436.png
Fingers crossed.

And I’m really hoping that this will be the way things are. If it gets too bad, I’ll just remember that Dark Phoenix, Avengers: Endgame, Soul of Stars, Honor Bound, King of Scars, and An Anatomy of Beasts are in our futures. So let’s try to make 2019 the inverse of 2016, everyone. Make it good. 🙂

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (Movie review)

Hey, everyone, and happy Labor Day!

Let me just start off by saying that I didn’t have the highest expectations for this movie. I read all three of the books in Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series earlier this year (not review, but well loved by yours truly), and I didn’t want the movie to drastically change from the book, as all too many YA adaptations have in recent years. (Looking at you, Love, Simon…fantastic book, but way too much changed between the book and the movie…😬) The trailer really didn’t do anything to ease my suspicions.

Then it came out a few weeks ago, and it seemed to be getting some positive reviews. About two weeks after its initial release, my mom and I decided to watch it on Netflix. And I’m happy to say that the movie adaptation of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before exceeded my expectations!

For the most part, I felt like they did a great job of staying true to the book. No unexplained characters that didn’t exist in the books, hardly any deviation from the plot, all the good things. They nailed all of the characters. No kidding. Nailed them.

Let’s start off with Lara Jean. Her portrayal was spot-on, down to the little details. Not to mention, I loved all of those perfect lil outfits she put together. Absolutely adorable. A+, Netflix. Thank you.

Also, kind of unrelated but kind of not, throughout the movie, I had this feeling at the back of my head that I recognized her from somewhere else.  It wasn’t until the end of the movie that I realized…

Jubilee_EW.jpg

…JUBILEE!

She was so adorable! I wish we’d gotten more of her and all of her wonderful, neon 80’s-ness. Maybe we’ll see more of her in Dark Phoenix. Or maybe not. But I kinda want to see more of her. I mean, the only time we got to see her powers was in the deleted mall scene (which, by the way, is totally worth it to watch).

Now, back on topic.

coveys_wide-591f7a7bbe1817293bd4b131b82d3c92c999e71a-s800-c85.jpg

They TOTALLY NAILED Kitty. I mean, they captured all of her hysterical sass and charm. Oh, my goodness. I missed lil Kitty.

Overall, I liked Margot, though I felt like she was slightly more of a jerk than she was in the books. Also, I imaged her with a bob and straight-ish bangs. Kind of like a younger version of Jenny Han’s original author photo, come to think of it. Weird, I know, but that’s just my brain. Don’t judge me.

original.jpg

I felt that Josh and Peter were also pretty spot-on, mostly how I imagined them in the books. Peter had always gotten on my nerves in the books (Really, Lara Jean? You chose him? Out of everyone? God…), and he got on my nerves in the movie, so…I guess that was a good sign? Kinda? 🤷‍♀️

Also, this might have just been me, but…did Peter and Josh look eerily alike? For the first twenty minutes, I had a bit of trouble distinguishing between the two of them…

Aaaaanyway, they pretty much nailed most everything. My only major problem was the ending.

to-all-the-boys-ive-loved-before-netflix-01-1534347275.jpg

I…just don’t remember if it even happened in the book. And even if it was, it felt really forced. Like, no, this is not Lara Jean and Peter. This is over-the-top, corny, Hollywood chick-flick material. No. Stop. Just act normally. Please. Oog.

But as I said, overall, a great movie. I was happy to see that they’d done just enough justice to the original series, and it was an all-around, cute and feel-good movie. Perfect for Saturday afternoons and whatnot.

I hope you’ve had a good long weekend, and enjoy the rest of your day! I’ve got the first BRT of September 2018 coming up tomorrow, and I’ve got a couple more posts planned out for the near future. So stay tuned, everyone!

“What have we here?” (Solo: A Star Wars Story review)

I was skeptical of trailer one. Trailer two got me fairly pumped. The CoS and a friend’s description of an NPR review got me even more pumped. My brother saw it two days before me, and he ultimately convinced me.

But Solo really exceeded all expectations! solo-theatrical-poster_f98a86eb.jpeg

Now, let me get this straight. I wouldn’t say that Solo was the best Star Wars movie in existence. Choosing a favorite Star Wars movie would be on the same level as choosing a favorite child, but the title proooooobably goes to The Empire Strikes Back. But I loved it! A really fun, action-packed, and fast-paced ride. Sure, it had its flaws (Lookin’ at you, Rio), but in general, super fun.

We all had our doubts before this movie, didn’t we? Han Solo looked like he couldn’t act (looking back, they put some of his worse lines in the trailer), Donald Glover didn’t seem like a fitting Lando, and YOU CAN’T HAVE A HAN SOLO MOVIE WITHOUT HARRISON FORD et cetera. But both turned out to be completely untrue. Though nobody can replace Harrison Ford, Alden Ehrenreich was a great Han, and the same can be said for Lando. God, Lando was hilarious. Perfect. You old smoothie. Chewbacca, was as always, wonderfully Chewbacca, and the other main characters (Beckett, Qi’Ra, L3-37, Val, etc.) were great additions to the Star Wars universe. The only one of the main characters I wasn’t a huge fan of was Rio. He was kind of a necessary character, in a way, but fell flat as far as comic relief went. Pretty annoying.

star-wars-phoebe-waller-bridge-l3-37-fleabag-han-solo-solo-a-star-wars-story-han-solo-movie3-1357189.jpg

Now, on the subject of L3, DANG. I seriously wanna put her on a Women’s March sign next year. “REBELLION!!!!!” *slams fist on button* “Freedom.”

Before I transition into my next point, let me just say one thing…

VISION.

What.

Have.

You.

DONE?!?!?

HOLD THE PHONE, VISION, HOW HAVE YOU BEEN TRANSPORTED TO A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY? Oh, and on that subject, where’d you get a fancy yacht? Got any paprika?

All of the villains in this movie were superb. Both Dryden Voss and Enfys Nest were just…for lack of better words, AWESOME. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. I kinda want Dryden’s knives now. Oh, and Enfys Nest’s ENTIRE ****ING COSTUME. Hey, Comic-Con and Halloween are coming up soon…*rubs hands together maniacally*

So, Star Wars fans, I don’t think many of you will be disappointed. Even if you are, it’s still super fun.

“You’ll never know how much I love you…NOPE PSYCHE THIS MOVIE!!!”

In my last post, I eluded to a post about my new favorite movie. Got any guesses from the hint(s) I’ve dropped yet?

Nope?

Alrighty then, I am more than happy to spill it now…drumroll, please…

…THE SHAPE OF WATER!

mL0285_1024x1024.jpg

(Okay, let me just say beforehand that I love the art for this poster. James Jean’s art is so amazing, don’tcha think?)

Before I spill all my feels, let me just give you a little backstory.

My parents and brother had seen the trailer for this movie, which they told me about, and I got SUPER excited. I watched the trailer, and BAM. SUPER PUMPED. But, alas, it’s rated R, so I wouldn’t get to see it until it came out on DVD. Nonetheless, I had a poster up in my room for it, and was ecstatic when it won those awards at the Golden Globes and Oscars. Now that I’ve seen it, I can say that it is fully deserving of every single one.

61AOfZOzLCL._SY606_.jpg

I knew it was going to be amazing from all of the hype and trailers and whatnot (also, it was Guillermo Del Toro, which was basically a prerequisite for it’s inherent awesomeness), but OH MY GOD, THIS MOVIE WAS STUNNING! So beautiful! I won’t say why, but man, by the end of the movie, I was SOBBING. Like, full on sobbing. It’s somewhat common for movies to make my cry a little, but there’s only one other time when a movie or TV show has made me cry close to that much.

That was Stranger Things, Season 2, the end of episode 8, when they’re talking to Will in the shed, and then Jonathan plays “Should I Stay or Should I Go”. YEESH, THE FEELS!

Aaaaanyway, what I’m saying is that this film was incredibly moving. Del Toro did a beyond spectacular job, from the plot, to the setting, and especially the characters. And going off of the subject of characters…this is gonna sound generic, but…Elisa and the Amphibian Man.

FILMThe_Shape_of_Water_.5a2f127dec50d.jpg
I can almost hear this image-it’s like they’re having some sort of telepathic conversation. “Aw, c’mon, can I cuss at Strickland in sign language some more?” “Elisa, let’s just go over here…” “I just wanna see the look on his face, though…” “Elisa…”

Oh my goodness, Elisa! Aaaaah!

Aside from just being kind of all-around adorable, she’s really, in a way, the heroine that we need in this day and age. She’s not only determined, caring, and brave, but also sees people for who they really are, and is fiercely loyal towards them. God, I love her…

The-Asset.jpg
HOLY ****, IT’S ABE SAPI-nevermind.

GAAAH, THE AMPHIBIAN MAN, TOO! They did such a fantastic job of making him mysterious, yet incredibly lovable at the same time. He and Elisa were so wonderful together, I can’t, it’s just so…*sobs* beautiful…

BreakableAdeptCrocodileskink-max-1mb.gif

(Also, apparently there’s a theory that Elisa and the Amphibian Man are Abe Sapien’s parents. If it weren’t for Abe’s actual origin story, I would SO be on board. That would be the coolest thing ever!)

Okay, I should probably stop before I start sobbing again. I have some fan art posts on the way, and I’ll definitely share some pics from my trip to California. Bye for now!

Breathe. Just…breathe…THE LAST JEDI IS OUT!!!

*LOUD WOOKIEE ROARING ENSUES*

GUYS, GUYS, GUYS! THE LAST JEDI WAS AWESOME!!!!!

star-wars-the-last-jedi-credit-disney-lucasfilm.jpg
After the first trailer came out, I had this as my iPod wallpaper for like, a month straight or something. It was pretty dang amazing.

A word of advice: please don’t listen to the haters on this one, guys. Yeah, there’s some things that could have been improved upon, I wasn’t thrilled with a few of the new characters, but overall, it is an absolutely SPECTACULAR film. And I swear on the soul of Carrie Fisher that I won’t spoil any of the huge surprises, but I’ll tell you that both your mind and your heart will probably explode by the time the credits start rolling.

Just like in The Force Awakens, Daisy Ridley’s Rey really blew it out of the water once again. I absolutely love her-tough, fierce, and focused, but vulnerable and kind on the inside. Poe and Finn were wonderful too, aside from a few corny comments that Finn makes on the side. But hey-it’s Star Wars, you’ve gotta have a little something corny. And Kylo Ren-OH. MY. GOODNESS. HE’S SPECTACULAR. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Something tells me that the Reylo shippers are going to go flippin’ insane after watching The Last Jedi, but now…I hate to say this, but there’s something that happens that I won’t say, but Reylo almost makes sense now. I’ll leave it at that.

Leia and Luke are wonderful as well. Leia was such a powerful character in this installment, as always, and I loved how Luke has transformed from a whiny (Sorry, Mr. Hamill…) young man into a much older and saltier one. Heck, I’m willing to bet that he’s saltier than the ocean around that island…😂 Chewie’s as lovable as always, as well.

As for the newer characters, I’ve got mixed feelings. Rose was kinda cute-a tad bit too bubbly, but she was sweet. Nowhere near as cool as Rey, but you know, nothing can possinly come close to her. I kinda hated Vice Admiral Holdo’s guts, but I kinda get the feeling that you were almost supposed to. (Also, what’s with that silver thingy in her hair? Whaaa?)

And then DJ…

GAAAAAAH. I felt PHYSICALLY UNCOMFORTABLE EVERY SINGLE TIME HE CAME ONSCREEN. SO. ****ING. CREEPY. GOD.

Also, the porgs were the best. Better than the ewoks, if I may be so bold. SO CUTE!!! They were perfect comic relief-not to annoying, and the perfect amount of feathery puffball adorableness.

original.gif
SQUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK!!!

The plot was also a perfect balance of Empire Strikes Back homage and startling, stunning new directions that ultimately blew my mind (and probably most everyone else’s in the immediate vicinity of the theater). Like I said, I will spoil nothing, but man-it is spectacular.

So please, fellow Star Wars fans, GET OUT THERE AND GO SEE IT!!!! PLEASE!!! I BEG YOU!!! *shrill porg screeching*

Hope you enjoyed my review!

So yeah. I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE. The story, the animation, the characters, the origami, the magic, the fire-breathing chickens…

Yes, there is a fire-breathing chicken briefly involved. Don’t ask.

Anyway, go see this movie. Your life will be better if you do.

Plus, there’s the added bonus of an amazing song in the credits. Here’s the link:

So, enjoy the movie! Hope you LOVELOVELOVELOVE it as much as I did!

At long last…THE FORCE AWAKENS!!!

YES! Finally! Being the complete geek that I am (and I swear, “geek” is no bad thing) I LOVE Star Wars and went to see Episode VII on opening day. For a visual, here’s the poster (and one of my desktop wallpapers)

Before I go on, I solemnly swear that I am up to no good…um *ahem*. Sorry! I meant to say that I solemnly swear that I won’t spoil anything.

And with that…OMG!!! It. Was. So. Darn. AWESOME!!!

I mean, I just LOVED it! First, there’s Rey. She is just so boss, and she rocks the triple bun thing with her hair, she’s great with a lightsaber, and you could make ten million memes out of all of the surprised looks she’s ever had on her face…! Speaking of which, you could also make a lot of memes out of Kylo Ren…Geez Louise…SOMEONE’S GOT SOME ANGER MANAGEMENT ISSUES! But he’s awesome anyway. I mean, his LIGHTSABER…! Okay. I guess I should stop so as not to give the entire movie away. But still! WATCH IT! IT IS SOOOOO AWESOME!

Before this post ends, I just want to share this little spin-off of the poster that the creator of the comic Bloom County did that is absolutely HILARIOUS!

Well, bye. And may the force be with you! 😀
