The Grishaverse Book Tag 🐐

Happy Saturday, bibliophiles!

Before I get going with this tag, I thought you’d all appreciate this…I’m currently in Florida helping my grandma clean out her house, and we’ve found all sorts of weird things lying around. But yesterday I found something great that I figured my fellow bibliophiles would appreciate…

…it appears Kaz Brekker left his cane in Florida. (My friend suggested that it was Inej’s revenge for him calling her an investment SKDJFHSKJDFHSKDJFH)

We’re shipping this back home soon, so I might just have a Halloween costume for this year…😳

Now for the book tag! I found this over at Kira Jeanette’s blog, and the tag was originally created by Rebecca McPeake on YouTube. I’m a huge Grishaverse fan, so I had to give this one a go!

Let’s begin, shall we?

🦌THE GRISHAVERSE BOOK TAG🐉

KAZ BREKKER: A book you shouldn’t judge by its cover

be kind. — FREDDY CARTER IN SHADOW AND BONE EPISODE...
Amazon.com: Zero Repeat Forever (1) (The Nahx Invasions) (9781481481847): Prendergast, G. S.: Books

UHHH THIS PROMPT WAS REALLY HARD –

Anyway, even though the cover for this edition of Zero Repeat Forever doesn’t make a whole lot of sense before reading the book, but I assure you, this one’s a treasure. (Maybe just stick with book 1, though? Book 2 was…weird, to say the least…)

NINA ZENIK: A book that made you feel empowered

Words Are Life — fairytcpia: NINA ZENIK AND MATTHIAS HELVAR...
Amazon.com: Sawkill Girls: 9780062696601: Legrand, Claire: Books

Sawkill Girls was a PHENOMENAL book – not only was the paranormal aspect amazing, but I loved the themes of sisterhood and feminine empowerment throughout. Highly recommended!

INEJ GHAFA: A book with a good balance of character and plot

Just leaving in 2021 | Six of crows, The grisha trilogy, Shadow
Gearbreakers (Gearbreakers, #1) by Zoe Hana Mikuta

Gearbreakers hit the perfect notes for me – I loved the plot, I loved the characters, and those two aspects were balanced so neatly! I am a little partial to all the characters interactions, though, because the chemistry between Eris and the rest of the Gearbreakers was so sweet…🥺

ALINA STARKOV: A unique book, one that is unlike anything you’ve ever read

shadow and bone gif on Tumblr
Amazon.com: Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything (9781534448636): Gilliland, Raquel Vasquez: Books

I’ve seen a lot of genre-bending books out there, but rarely do ones like Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything come along – a seamless mix of sci-fi, contemporary and magical realism that tugged at all my heartstrings!

MAL ORETSEV: A book that always sticks with you

burns, babble & books
Amazon.com: The Darkness Outside Us eBook: Schrefer, Eliot: Kindle Store

Okay, I only finished this one on Tuesday, but MAN. THIS BOOK. The Darkness Outside Us is my most recent 5-star read as of now – it started out like any other sci-fi thriller, but it quickly took a turn for simultaneous darkness, philosophical musings, existential crises, and a little bit of hope. I could not stop thinking about it, and I still can’t. (Expect a review next week!)

THE DARKLING: A book with a dark plot/storyline

I'm Thinking of Ending Things | Book by Iain Reid | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster

There’s a lot of dark things about I’m Thinking of Ending Thingsthis one could’ve fit with the last prompt as well, since it’s stuck with me for quite a while too…(the movie’s amazing as well!)

JESPER FAHEY: A book that people always seem to leave out

Jesper Fahey Is The Best Character In "Shadow And Bone"
HEHE the giddy grin on my face when I found this gif –
Amazon.com: Heart of Iron (9780062652850): Poston, Ashley: Books

Okay, okay, I know I put this book in every single book tag I do, but HEAR ME OUT…

As I’m starting to see Ashley Poston’s books get the recognition they deserve, it feels like Heart of Iron is left out of a lot of the discussion, which is such a shame, seeing as it’s everything you could ever want in both a space opera and a retelling…

WYLAN VAN ECK: A book that wasn’t what it seemed at first

Amazon.com: Invincible Compendium Volume 1 (8601420907461): Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley: Books

I’m just gonna slap this one in here and count the show in too…without spoiling anything, Invincible starts out like most every superhero origin story, but it gets a lot darker VERY quickly, trust me…

MATTHIAS HELVAR: A book that was bad at first but turned out good

SUOMI FINLAND PERKELE — Hello! May I ask for a song prompt for Matthias...
Amazon.com: The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea (9781536204315): Tokuda-Hall, Maggie: Books

This one was another hard one, so this is the closest I could find…

I wouldn’t say The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea started out badly, per se – it was just a little slow to start. But once it got going, it turned out to be one of my favorite reads of this year so far!

NIKOLAI LANTSOV: A witty book

Amazon.com: How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse: Book One of the Thorne Chronicles eBook: Eason, K.: Kindle Store

How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse had no shortage of sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek parody, and I loved every minute of it!

Top 5 Saturday (10/24/20)–Wishlist 📚

Happy Saturday, bibliophiles!

It’s time for another Top 5 Saturday! This was originally started by Devouring Books, and it sounded like such a fun post to take part in. Today’s topic is books on my wishlist. I have a TERRIBLE habit of buying only one or two books from a series, mostly because I read so much at the library, so I have tons of lone sequels and threequels and such. So this list is mostly comprised of books I want to re-read, and that would complete a series I don’t fully own.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE FOR OCTOBER:

10/3/20—Intimidating Books

10/10/10—Feminist Themes

10/17/20—Animal on the Cover

10/24/20—Wishlist

10/31/20—Vampires

Rules!

  • Share your top 5 books of the current topic– these can be books that you want to read, have read and loved, have read and hated, you can do it any way you want.
  • Tag the original post
  • Tag 5 people

Let’s begin, shall we?

TOP 5 SATURDAY (10/24/20)–WISHLIST

Warcross, Marie Lu

Amazon.com: Warcross (9780399547966): Lu, Marie: Books

I have an autographed copy of book 2, but I got book 1 at the library. I think this was my first exposure to Marie Lu, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Also, WHO’S EXCITED THAT IT’S CONFIRMED THAT WE’RE GETTING A TV SERIES?

Defy the Stars, Claudia Gray

Defy the Stars (Defy the Stars Series #1) by Claudia Gray, Paperback | Barnes & Noble®

[chanting] Sci-fi, sci-fi, SCI-FI, SCI-FI–

Legend, Marie Lu

Amazon.com: Legend (9780142422076): Lu, Marie: Books

Out of this series, I only have Champion and Rebel, so consider Prodigy on this list as well…

Gemina, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Amazon.com: Gemina (The Illuminae Files) (9780553499155): Kaufman, Amie, Kristoff, Jay: Books

Again, consider both this book and Obsidio on here. This was a 5-star trilogy all around; maybe I should re-read them, but it would take…a while…

Siege and Storm, Leigh Bardugo

Amazon.com: Siege and Storm (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, 2) (9781250044433): Bardugo, Leigh: Books

One word: Nikolai.

I TAG ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PARTICIPATE!

Book Review Tuesday (7/24/18)-Siege and Storm

Hey there, everyone, and welcome to this week’s Book Review Tuesday!

My review for today is the sequel to Shadow and Bone (See 7/3/18). As soon as I finished it, I just knew that I had to borrow it from the library. And I’m excited to say that it’s just as good as Shadow and Bone, if not better.

Enjoy the review, everyone!

Siege and Storm (Grishaverse, #2)

Alina is now on the run from the Darkling and her own past. Now the Sun Summoner, she and her old friend Mal must lay low to keep her new powers a secret. Her mission now is to find the second Amplifier before the Darkling. But the Darkling’s dark magic is growing more wicked than ever before, and she’ll need more than herself and Mal to defeat him and destroy the Shadow Fold. With the help of unexpected allies at sea, Alina must decide between the friends and country she loves and the magic that’s tearing her apart.

OH MY GOD. YOU GUYS SERIOUSLY NEED TO READ THIS SERIES. PLEASE.

please begging cat.gif

I assure you that you won’t regret it.

Siege and Storm was everything that was good about Shadow and Bone, and then some. Alina, the Darkling, and all of the original characters were just as wonderful (okay, “wonderful” probably isn’t the best word to describe the Darkling, but I still love him). And now, we’ve got a bunch of new characters, who are lovable in almost every way. The writing, world building, and everything else in between had me speechless. YESSSSSSSS! YES YES YES YES YES!!!

I’ve finished the final book in the trilogy, Ruin and Rising, and all I’ll say for now is…

TangibleSillyAmericanwigeon-size_restricted.gif

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH.gif

SHUT UP.gif

ALL THE FEELS.

So I’ll get to reviewing that sometime in the near future.

Have a great rest of your day, keep on reading, and do not be ashamed if your book feels show!

Book Review Tuesday (7/3/18)-Shadow and Bone

Hello, fellow bookworms, and welcome to the first BRT of July 2018!

*static* We interrupt the promised review of One Dark Throne (I’ll do it soon, I promise) with a review of something even better.

I heard about the Shadow and Bone series via EpicReads (super fun site for all you YA book nerds out there 😊), and decided to give it a try. My expectations were for it to be a typical, YA fantasy novel-cliched and annoying at worst, fun and captivating at best. When I actually read it, however, I knew I had discovered something truly wonderful.

Shadow and Bone isn’t just magical fun and romance. It’s an intricately crafted gem of a novel, and an absolute must-read for all diehard YA fantasy fans.

Now for the review. Enjoy!

Shadow and Bone

In the nation of Ravka, there is more than one kind of sea. There is the True Sea, which is like any other you’ll see in your lifetime. And then there is the Shadow Fold, or the UnSea, an ever expanding sea of darkness, crawling with foul creatures that will swallow you whole. Normal humans are virtually powerless against it. Until now, that’s how Alina Starkov, an orphan mapmaker, thought of herself. But after a tragic accident, she reveals that she has unimaginable abilities. Soon, she is sought after by the Grisha, a group of humans with all sorts of magical powers. Leading the Grisha is the Darkling, a secretive man with unimaginable power. The Darkling has taken a special interest in Alina, hoping  that their powers combined could destroy the Shadow Fold forever. But are his intentions really what they seem?

WOOOOOOOOOO! I’M OBSESSED WITH THIS SERIES NOW!!!

WOOOOOOOOOHOOO.gif

Leigh Bardugo has done an excellent job crafting this novel. Even the smallest details are given a wonderful, creative spin, making for a world like no other. Such an intricate, compelling book in every way. Alina, the Darkling (GOD, I LOVE HIM), Genya…everyone! Awesome! YAAAAAH!

I’ve been looking for a good excuse to put an X-Men gif somewhere…Thanks, Eric. And thank you, Leigh Bardugo, for making a series that is very nearly…perfection.

I’ve just finished the sequel, Siege and Storm, which I will MOST DEFINITELY review later on!
