Goodreads Monday (6/7/21) – The Star Host

Happy Monday, bibliophiles!

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme created by Lauren’s Page Turners. All you have to do to participate is pick a book from your Goodreads TBR, and explain why you want to read it.

I try to always pick more diverse books from my TBR for this meme, but I’m going to be shifting my focus to LGBTQ+ books in particular for the month of June. I found this week’s book over at Queer Books for Teens (which is a great resource if you want LGBTQ+ book recs!), and it sounds like a fantastic and romantic sci-fi!

Let’s begin, shall we?

GOODREADS MONDAY (6/7/21) – THE STAR HOST by F.T. Lukens

The Star Host (Broken Moon, #1) by F.T. Lukens

Blurb from Goodreads:

Ren grew up listening to his mother tell stories about the Star Hosts – a mythical group of people possessed by the power of the stars. The stories were the most exciting part of Ren’s life, and he often dreamed about leaving his backwater planet and finding his place among the neighboring drifts. When Ren is captured by soldiers and taken from his home, his dream slips further out of his grasp. Now a slave of a despotic Baron, Ren must remain inconspicuous while plotting his escape. It’s a challenge since the general of the Baron’s army is convinced Ren is something out of one of his mother’s stories.

Ren finds companionship in the occupant of the cell next to his, a drifter named Asher. A member of the Phoenix Corps, Asher is mysterious, charming, and exactly the person Ren needs to anchor him as his sudden technopathic ability threatens to consume him. Ren doesn’t mean to become attached, but after a daring escape, a trek across the planet, and an eventful ride on a merchant ship, Asher is the only thing that reminds Ren of home. Together, they must warn the drifts of the Baron’s plans, master Ren’s growing power, and try to save their friends while navigating the growing attraction between them.

So why do I want to read this?

Assassins can fly — Deep Blue Space 🌌 gifs made by me :)

I initially put this on my TBR because I heard that it had bisexual rep, which always gets me excited! Even though YA is taking some great leaps in representation, I still don’t see many bi boys represented, so a book like this is so important.

Other than that, I’ll put anything on my TBR if it’s advertised as “queer sci-fi,” but The Star Host sounds especially fascinating. I like the pseudo-fantasy aspect of the Star Hosts themselves, and I’m excited to see how Lukens executes that in what looks like a predominantly sci-fi atmosphere. (The synopsis is giving me Luke Skywalker vibes for Ren? I think I could go with that) And the romance between Ren and Asher sounds so sweet…🥺

In short: all you need to do to convince me to put a book on my TBR is say “space bisexuals.”

That’s it for this week’s Goodreads Monday! This is probably all that I’ll be posting this week before I leave for my vacation, so I’ll see you all next week. Have a wonderful rest of your day, and take care of yourselves!

Star Wars Book Tag (+ an update or two)

book tags header

I’m back, everyone! Happy Thursday!

I’m finally out of school for the year! Officially halfway through high school…whew…

But anyway, the AP exam and finals weren’t all that bad. For a few classes, they canceled finals altogether, and others just had a paper or a lab report in place of a written test (REJOICE!). I did pretty well on almost all of them, but we’ll see about AP…

Other than that, I’ve had a good week and a half since I’ve taken a break. I got into an unfortunate loop of finding one good book to read, then having a slump of three- or two-star books in between. Luckily, I did get a fair amount of good books in. I also listened to a lot of Spiritualized, thanks to my dad (and by a lot, I mean a LOT), got to a scene that I’ve been picturing in my head for YEARS on my WIP, and the weather’s starting to warm up, which is both a blessing and a curse.

Now, back to our scheduled program.

I found this tag over at SMELLFOY CAN READ?, and the tag was created by Elisabeth Paige and Joana Sousa. As a (pretty much) lifelong fan of all things Star Wars, I was absolutely ELATED to find this tag.

So let’s begin, shall we?

this is where the fun begins

R2-D2: A book that made you laugh out loud

Without a doubt, Good Omens had me CACKLING.

My first thought was Alosa from Daughter of the Pirate KingIt takes a certain kind of person to be able to be a captain of a formidable pirate ship at the ripe old age of 17.

LEIA ORGANA: Best or worst love triangle

On another note, this is my favorite movie line of all time. Hands down.

Leia does not deserve the subject matter of this part of the tag…

I…hate love triangles in general, but for now, I’d just say the love triangle in the Hunger Gamestrilogy. 50% because Gale is repulsive, and 50% because that’s sadly what a lot of people tend to remember/take away from the series, as opposed to…y’know, the dystopian commentary and whatnot…

LUKE SKYWALKER: A rising star author, or a new author you’ve discovered and absolutely love

I’ve just started to discover Sy Montgomery’s nonfiction novels, and even though I’ve only read The Soul of an OctopusI absolutely ADORED it. I have How to Be a Good Creature on my list as well.

ANAKIN SKYWALKER: A book or series that started out well and then became bad

Without a doubt, the Shatter Me series. I was already salty about how the trilogy ended (Warner is awful, change my mind), but then after book 4, it just took a sharp left turn into the flat-out ridiculous. Such a shame.

Hmm…lots to choose from…

My first thought was Zin’s death in The Battle for WondLa(Yes, we’re going back to that…) He was one of my favorite characters, but he did NOT have to go out in such a completely twisted way…I won’t go into the gory details, but it’s rough to read.

Book Review Tuesday (3/26/19)-The Black Coats

Hey, everyone, and welcome to the last Book Review Tuesday of March 2019! I know I’ve said this…oh, thousands of times already, but it feels like this year’s gone by so fast. It feels like yesterday that it was the middle of January, and I was ankle-deep in snow as the wind bit at my cheeks.

Alright, that was an admittedly dramatic description, but that’s Colorado January in a nutshell. Cold, bitter, borderline brutal.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, I’m beginning to realize the treasure trove of feminist YA literature I’ve stumbled upon lately. I’m pretty sure I read this one on International Women’s Day, and boy, it was the PERFECT book for the occasion. Contemporary, with a slight fantasy twist, exploring all sides of feminism in a way that is perfectly suited to this day and age. The Black Coats eternally kept me on the edge of my seat, and I hope that all who read this feel the same way.

Enjoy the review! 🙂

The Black Coats

Ever since her cousin, Natalie, was murdered, Thea has been eager to exact her revenge. But with the killer having gone free and the case gone unnoticed, she struggles to find a way to come to terms with it.

But she isn’t alone.

Months after the death of her cousin, Thea discovers a black envelope with an invitation from a mysterious society that call themselves the Black Coats. They are a highly reclusive organization of women, all of whom have been hurt by men, that bring killers to justice and make the guilty answer for their crimes. At first, Thea is eager to join, intent on bringing her cousin’s killer to justice. But the more she delves into the history of the Black Coats, the more she realizes that the line between justice and needless revenge is thinner than ever. Can Thea avenge Natalie’s death without getting herself in too deep?

I’m really ashamed of how average my expectations were of this book. I expected it to be at least halfway-decent, a nice mystery to satiate myself after my continuous sci-fi/fantasy binge.

In the end, this is what my brain said to me about my assumptions:

WOW. The Black Coats really has it all–phenomal and heart wrenching  writing, startlingly real characters with heart and emotion, a plot that kept me on my toes, absolutely perfect chemistry, and a relevant theme that not only was necessary to touch on, but wasn’t delivered in a way that was preachy. Whether you’re looking for fiction, mystery, feminism, or even a little romance, The Black Coats is an essential for all of you bookworms out there. Every single one of you. 9/10 on my rating scale, and probably a solid A. Incredible job, Mrs. Oakes, this one’s a gem.

Well, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day, and a lovely spring break!  I promise to post more than BRTs in the time that is to come–I’ve got a few ideas, and I’ll probably come back after Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park with some good stories and pictures. See you soon, fellow bibliophiles! 😉

Breathe. Just…breathe…THE LAST JEDI IS OUT!!!

*LOUD WOOKIEE ROARING ENSUES*

GUYS, GUYS, GUYS! THE LAST JEDI WAS AWESOME!!!!!

star-wars-the-last-jedi-credit-disney-lucasfilm.jpg
After the first trailer came out, I had this as my iPod wallpaper for like, a month straight or something. It was pretty dang amazing.

A word of advice: please don’t listen to the haters on this one, guys. Yeah, there’s some things that could have been improved upon, I wasn’t thrilled with a few of the new characters, but overall, it is an absolutely SPECTACULAR film. And I swear on the soul of Carrie Fisher that I won’t spoil any of the huge surprises, but I’ll tell you that both your mind and your heart will probably explode by the time the credits start rolling.

Just like in The Force Awakens, Daisy Ridley’s Rey really blew it out of the water once again. I absolutely love her-tough, fierce, and focused, but vulnerable and kind on the inside. Poe and Finn were wonderful too, aside from a few corny comments that Finn makes on the side. But hey-it’s Star Wars, you’ve gotta have a little something corny. And Kylo Ren-OH. MY. GOODNESS. HE’S SPECTACULAR. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Something tells me that the Reylo shippers are going to go flippin’ insane after watching The Last Jedi, but now…I hate to say this, but there’s something that happens that I won’t say, but Reylo almost makes sense now. I’ll leave it at that.

Leia and Luke are wonderful as well. Leia was such a powerful character in this installment, as always, and I loved how Luke has transformed from a whiny (Sorry, Mr. Hamill…) young man into a much older and saltier one. Heck, I’m willing to bet that he’s saltier than the ocean around that island…😂 Chewie’s as lovable as always, as well.

As for the newer characters, I’ve got mixed feelings. Rose was kinda cute-a tad bit too bubbly, but she was sweet. Nowhere near as cool as Rey, but you know, nothing can possinly come close to her. I kinda hated Vice Admiral Holdo’s guts, but I kinda get the feeling that you were almost supposed to. (Also, what’s with that silver thingy in her hair? Whaaa?)

And then DJ…

GAAAAAAH. I felt PHYSICALLY UNCOMFORTABLE EVERY SINGLE TIME HE CAME ONSCREEN. SO. ****ING. CREEPY. GOD.

Also, the porgs were the best. Better than the ewoks, if I may be so bold. SO CUTE!!! They were perfect comic relief-not to annoying, and the perfect amount of feathery puffball adorableness.

original.gif
SQUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK!!!

The plot was also a perfect balance of Empire Strikes Back homage and startling, stunning new directions that ultimately blew my mind (and probably most everyone else’s in the immediate vicinity of the theater). Like I said, I will spoil nothing, but man-it is spectacular.

So please, fellow Star Wars fans, GET OUT THERE AND GO SEE IT!!!! PLEASE!!! I BEG YOU!!! *shrill porg screeching*

Hope you enjoyed my review!
