Star Wars Book Tag (+ an update or two)

book tags header

I’m back, everyone! Happy Thursday!

I’m finally out of school for the year! Officially halfway through high school…whew…

But anyway, the AP exam and finals weren’t all that bad. For a few classes, they canceled finals altogether, and others just had a paper or a lab report in place of a written test (REJOICE!). I did pretty well on almost all of them, but we’ll see about AP…

Other than that, I’ve had a good week and a half since I’ve taken a break. I got into an unfortunate loop of finding one good book to read, then having a slump of three- or two-star books in between. Luckily, I did get a fair amount of good books in. I also listened to a lot of Spiritualized, thanks to my dad (and by a lot, I mean a LOT), got to a scene that I’ve been picturing in my head for YEARS on my WIP, and the weather’s starting to warm up, which is both a blessing and a curse.

Now, back to our scheduled program.

I found this tag over at SMELLFOY CAN READ?, and the tag was created by Elisabeth Paige and Joana Sousa. As a (pretty much) lifelong fan of all things Star Wars, I was absolutely ELATED to find this tag.

So let’s begin, shall we?

this is where the fun begins

R2-D2: A book that made you laugh out loud

sad beep

Without a doubt, Good Omens had me CACKLING.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter ...

PADME AMIDALA: A kick-butt female character

My first thought was Alosa from Daughter of the Pirate KingIt takes a certain kind of person to be able to be a captain of a formidable pirate ship at the ripe old age of 17.

LEIA ORGANA: Best or worst love triangle

On another note, this is my favorite movie line of all time. Hands down.

Leia does not deserve the subject matter of this part of the tag…

I…hate love triangles in general, but for now, I’d just say the love triangle in the Hunger Gamestrilogy. 50% because Gale is repulsive, and 50% because that’s sadly what a lot of people tend to remember/take away from the series, as opposed to…y’know, the dystopian commentary and whatnot…

LUKE SKYWALKER: A rising star author, or a new author you’ve discovered and absolutely love

Luke Skywalker GIF by Star Wars - Find & Share on GIPHY

I’ve just started to discover Sy Montgomery’s nonfiction novels, and even though I’ve only read The Soul of an OctopusI absolutely ADORED it. I have How to Be a Good Creature on my list as well.

ANAKIN SKYWALKER: A book or series that started out well and then became bad

Anakin Skywalker GIF - Starwarsmay4 - Discover & Share GIFs

Without a doubt, the Shatter Me series. I was already salty about how the trilogy ended (Warner is awful, change my mind), but then after book 4, it just took a sharp left turn into the flat-out ridiculous. Such a shame.

Amazon.com: Shatter Me (8601300047799): Mafi, Tahereh: Books

QUI-GONN JINN: Worst character death (SPOILERS)

Hmm…lots to choose from…

My first thought was Zin’s death in The Battle for WondLa(Yes, we’re going back to that…) He was one of my favorite characters, but he did NOT have to go out in such a completely twisted way…I won’t go into the gory details, but it’s rough to read.

HAN SOLO: A book with a lot of sass

Aurora Rising has no short supply at sassy, sarcastic writing, and the same can be said for the characters. (*coughcough FINIAN coughcough*)

I think The Black Witch takes the cake for this one. There was clearly so much care put into everything from the history to the magical races, and everything in between.

BEN/OBI-WAN KENOBI: A book you went in with low expectations and that blew you away

I didn’t have high expectations for The Looking Glassbut I was pleasantly surprised by the lush writing–not to mention, the great music references.

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft taught me volumes about the essentials of writing. I still try to take Stephen King’s advice to heart.

The Netflix Book Tag

book tags header.jpeg

Hello again, bibliophiles!

I’ve been wanting to do this tag for a little while, but I figured that it would be good for today since I’ve pretty much been subsisting off of Netflix for most of this four-day weekend. (*coughcough I AM MOTHER coughcough MONTY PYTHON coughcough*) I found this tag on First Line Reader, and the tag was originally created by A Darker Shade of Whitney.

RECENTLY WATCHED: The last book you finished reading

Image result for guts raina telgemeier

I’ve been a big fan of Raina Telgemeier for years, and I was so excited to find Guts at the comic shop last week!

TOP PICKS: A book/books that have been recommended to you based on a book you have previously read

Image result for ghosting you alexander eberhart

Ghosting You was recommended to me not long ago, based on the fact that I read and adored Like a Love Story

RECENTLY ADDED: The last book you bought

81IBlK0rLvL.jpg

Image result for sky without stars book

I bought both Sky Without Stars and Loki: Where Mischief Lies last week, and I’m excited to read them both!

POPULAR ON NETFLIX: Books that everyone knows about (2 you’ve read and 2 you haven’t or have no interest in reading)

Both The Poet X and Red Queen have received tons of hype over the years, but I have very different opinions about them: the former was an absolute triumph, and the latter was…ugh. Nope.

Image result for the hate u give book

Image result for one of us is lying book cover

I’ve been recommended both The Hate U Give and One of Us is Lying countless times, but I’m not super invested in reading them. I might, but they’re low on my priority.

COMEDIES: A funny book

Image result for good omens book cover

I know I use this one every time I do a book tag, but Good Omens had me in stitches.

DRAMA: A character who is a drama king/queen

Image result for in other lands book

Elliot from In Other Lands was the very definition of melodramatic…part of why I DNF’d this book, ultimately.

ANIMATED: A book with cartoons on the cover

Image result for eliza and her monsters

As iffy as Eliza and Her Monsters was, the cover was super cute.

WATCH AGAIN: A book/series you want to read again

Image result for the catcher in the rye

I haven’t read The Catcher in the Rye since we read it for my English class last year, but I enjoyed it immensely.

DOCUMENTARIES: A nonfiction book that you’d recommend to everybody

Image result for on writing stephen king

My nonfiction shelf is pretty slim, but for those of you who are writers/aspiring writers, I’d highly recommend On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

ACTION AND ADVENTURE: An action-packed book

Image result for smoke thieves

Though it was a bit more slow-burn at the beginning, The Smoke Thieves managed to keep me on my toes for a good 3/4 of the book.

NEW RELEASES: A book that just came out or will be coming out soon that you can’t wait to read

Image result for honor lost rachel caine

I had no idea this had come out until my school librarian (who I recommended the series to, and now loves it 😄) told me that it had come out! I cannot WAIT to get my hands on Honor Lost

I tag anyone that wants to participate!

Image result for go ahead gif

Since I’ve already posted today, I won’t post a second song today, so just check out Goodreads Monday (2/17/20)–From Under the Mountain if you want to see what it is 🙂

That just about wraps up this tag! Have a wonderful day, and take care of yourselves!

Weekly Update: January 6–January 12, 2020

Happy Sunday, bibliophiles!

Yeesh…what a week. I’ve successfully gotten through my first week back to school, but of course, the universe decided that it would be the perfect week to hammer me with random illnesses. [loudly destroys tissues] I’m on the mend now, but…ew, sheesh…

Image result for sneezing gif

That’s why I’ve been a bit sluggish this week, so I’ll try to be a tad less lethargic in the coming weeks, Honors Bio schedule permitting. But hey, you know what this week also brought? The decade’s first book and comic haul!

20 Questions Book Tag

book tags header.jpeg

Happy Saturday, bibliophiles!

I came across this tag on the wonderful Megabunny Reads, and I thought it would be fun to participate. Here goes nothin’…

HOW MANY BOOKS IS TOO MANY IN A SERIES?

I’m notorious for starting series and never finishing them, but I feel like the limit for me would be once it passes the double-digit mark. Unless they’re spin-offs, I’m not sure how any series could possible perpetuate a story for so long without making it needless.

Image result for too long gif

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CLIFFHANGERS?

If done well, they’re an excellent way to keep the reader hooked. If poorly executed, I sometimes find that they can be a pathetic excuse for a rushed ending. But most of the time, I find them good, but painfully so.

Image result for cliffhanger gif

HARDBACK OR PAPERBACK?

Eh…I don’t really discriminate. Hardback is more expensive, but I feel like there’s an equally likely chance for them to get damaged, so either one works for me.

Image result for both is fine gif

FAVORITE BOOK?

Hands down, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Image result for frankenstein book cover

LEAST FAVORITE BOOK?

Probably The Witch of Blackbird PondWe had to read in in 6th grade, and I despised it with every cell of my being. So dry and boring.

Image result for the witch of blackbird pond

LOVE TRIANGLE…YES OR NO?

I mean…no. I can recall many times where they’ve worked out, but most of the time, they definitely bug me.

Image result for ew david gif

THE MOST RECENT BOOK THAT YOU COULDN’T FINISH?

I hate to say it, but Half Bad by Sally Green. After adoring her Smoke Thieves series, I was so disappointed at how little plot there was. But hey, debut novel. Everybody makes mistakes.

Image result for half bad sally green

A BOOK YOU’RE CURRENTLY READING?

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King. I haven’t even hit the 100-page mark, but I already love it.

Image result for on writing stephen king

THE LAST BOOK YOU RECOMMENDED TO SOMEONE?

My school’s book club meeting for this month was yesterday, so I certainly threw out a boatload of recommendations. I think the most prominent one that hadn’t previously surfaced was Alexander Freed’s novelization of Rogue One

Image result for rogue one book

OLDEST BOOK THAT YOU’VE READ?

I think that Frankenstein would take that title as well.

Image result for frankenstein gif

NEWEST BOOK THAT YOU’VE READ?

Hmm…I think it might be Marissa Meyer’s SupernovaThat one was just published last November.

Image result for supernova marissa meyer

FAVORITE AUTHOR?

I don’t think I can pick just one, but Mary Shelley, Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman, Tony DiTerlizzi, Neal Shusterman, Ray Bradbury, Sarah Maria Griffin…the list goes on.

Image result for long list gif

BUYING BOOKS OR BORROWING THEM?

I practically live at my local library, and I borrow books nearly every week; that being said, I don’t prefer it to buying. So, again, I’m indecisive.

Image result for both are good gif

A BOOK YOU DISLIKE BUT EVERYONE ELSE LIKES?

Red Queen. I’m still so baffled as to why it’s got such a huge fandom. It’s pretty much just ripping off every YA trope and rolling them into a sloppy, disgusting ball…

Image result for red queen cover

BOOKMARKS OR DOG-EARS?

Bookmarks, no question. Dog-earing is blasphemy, and you cannot change my mind.

no no no no.gif

A BOOK YOU CAN RE-READ OVER AND OVER?

Heart of IronAurora Risingand B.P.R.D., Vol. 2: The Soul of Venice and Other Storiesto name a few.

Image result for over and over gif

CAN YOU READ WHILE LISTENING TO MUSIC?

I almost always read while listening to music! I sometimes change the song if it doesn’t fit the mood of the book, but you can almost always see me with my headphones on while I’m reading.

Image result for listening to music gif

MULTIPLE POVs OR ONE POV?

I can go either way. One POV eliminates confusion, and with multiple, you can get several perspectives, as well as the possibility of dramatic irony. Either works for me.

Image result for either way gif

DO YOU READ A BOOK IN ONE SITTING OR OVER MULTIPLE DAYS ON AVERAGE?

Multiple days, depending on how long the book is. It’s rare that I finish a book in one sitting.

Image result for days gif

I tag anyone who’d like to join in!

Today’s song:

(I’ve been on a big Phoebe Bridgers kick lately…)

That just about wraps up this post! Have a great rest of your day, and keep on reading!
