Splendid Spring Book Tag 🌷

Posted on April 2, 2022 by madeline @ The Bookish Mutant

Happy Saturday, bibliophiles!

I was in the mood to do a book tag this afternoon, and since the Spring Equinox came around recently, I figured it would be a good time to do this one! I found it over at Seven Late Night Thoughts with Zoe, and the tag was originally created by Victoria Mann on Booktube.

Let’s begin, shall we?

🪷SPLENDID SPRING BOOK TAG🪷

1. Everywhere you look flowers are blooming! Choose a book you love or think you will love with flowers on the cover.

I just read Flamefall and enjoyed it, and it has some flowers on the (very busy) cover!

2. Spring is the perfect time for a fun trip! Choose a book you’ve read or would like to read while traveling from one place to another.

I had to read The Road for school, and I made the mistake of reading it on the plane at night. It was easily the most grim and depressing book I’ve ever read as is, but reading it on a night flight to Florida made it even worse.

3. Who doesn’t love a good Spring Fling? Choose a book you were obsessed with for a short period of time, but then you swiftly cast it aside.

The Familiars was my favorite series for a little while when I was in elementary school, but I remember being really disappointed by book 4. These didn’t age terribly well…

4. Everyone loves the smell of freshly mowed grass, but not at an ungodly hour! Choose a book that personifies as a middle-aged dad waking up at 7am on a Saturday to mow the lawn when he should be sleeping like the rest of us.

…that’s…oddly specific…I don’t even know what kind of book I’d put for this prompt skdjhskjfh

5. A surprise rain shower might spoil your outdoor fun, but don’t worry the sun will be back! Choose a book that made you really sad, but the sun still shines in the end.

Like a Love Story absolutely gutted me, but I suppose it was hopeful towards the end. Certainly had some sweet moments in between all the tears.

6. It’s that time of year when all the animals stretch their limbs and come out of hibernation. Choose a book that pulled you out of a reading slump.

The Grief Keeper was an immensely powerful book, and it broke me out of a long reading slump!

7. Students all over exhale a sigh of relief knowing they get a break from school. Choose a book whose friend group you’d like to spend Spring Break with.

I just know that spending spring break with Squad 312 would be absolute chaos…I’d stick around though

8. Spring is all about rebirth and blooming. Choose a book that made you grow as a person.

Steal Like an Artist was a book that helped develop my creativity so much! I printed out one of the illustrations/quotes and put it on my wall.

9. A picnic at the park is the perfect springtime activity! Choose a book with a character who you think would pack the best picnic basket.

Levi from Fangirl would make a tasty picnic basket—complete with some Starbucks!

10. For many, spring is the first break from the bitterness of winter! Choose a book that is the embodiment of sunshine.

Heartstopper is all kinds of sweet and sunshiney!

My 5-Star Reads of 2020 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Posted on December 28, 2020 by madeline @ The Bookish Mutant

Hi again, bibliophiles!

As this dumpster fire of a year comes to a close, I thought it would be nice to reflect on what made it bearable: books. Reading was what kept me going through good times and bad this year, and while I read a whole lot, there were a select few books that stood out from the rest, from new-to-me authors and authors I’ve been following for years.

(NOTE: this list also contains books that I rated 4.75 stars and rounded up to 5.)

Let’s begin, shall we?

Me thinking about all of these books

THE BOOKISH MUTANT’S 5-STAR READS OF 2020

Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams–Mike Allred

BOWIE: Stardust, Rayguns, & Moonage Daydreams (OGN biography of Ziggy Stardust, gift for Bowie fan, gift for music lover, Neil Gaiman, Michael Allred): Allred, Michael, Horton, Steve, Allred, Laura, Gaiman, Neil: 9781683834489:

I mean, it’s David Bowie’s early career drawn by Mike Allred. What’s not to like?

The Survivor (The Pioneer, #2)–Bridget Tyler

The Survivor: A Pioneer Novel by Bridget Tyler, Hardcover | Barnes & Noble®

A beautiful conclusion to a sci-fi trilogy that’s truly like no other.

(read my review here!)

Sawkill Girls–Claire Legrand

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand

This was an unexpected 5-star read for me; Claire Legrand had been hit-or-miss for me in the past, but Sawkill Girls boasted enchanting prose and powerful themes that hooked me in from page 1.

(read my review here!)

The Invisible Library (The Invisible Library, #1)–Genevieve Cogman

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman

Even though the two subsequent books I read from this series were tragically disappointing, The Invisible Library was SO MUCH BOOKISH FUN. It’s a shame that the series went downhill so quickly…

(read my review here!)

Aurora Burning (Aurora Cycle, #2)–Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff: 9781524720926 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books

Definitely my most anticipated release of the year, and my favorite read of the year. A truly worthy predecessor to one of my favorite books of all time. (But that ending…)

(read my review here!)

The Sound of Stars–Alechia Dow

Amazon.com: The Sound of Stars (9781335911551): Dow, Alechia: Books

Okay, WOW, what a debut! Almost everything I’d want in a novel: diversity, girls kicking butt, sweet romance, aliens, resistance, and no shortage of book and music references.

(read my review here!)

Honor Lost (The Honors, #3)–Ann Aguirre and Rachel Caine

Honor Lost (The Honors, #3) by Rachel Caine

A thrilling and heartwarming closer to a truly wonderful sci-fi trilogy. I’ll miss this bunch of chaotic space children.

(read my review here!)

On a Sunbeam–Tillie Walden

Amazon.com: On a Sunbeam (9781250178138): Walden, Tillie: Books

This was my first exposure to Tillie Walden, and it blew me away! Beautiful, atmospheric artwork and a heartwarming story of love and friendship.

(read my review here!)

TRUEL1F3 (Lifelike, #3)–Jay Kristoff

TRUEL1F3 (Truelife) by Jay Kristoff: 9781524714000 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books

Best book out of the trilogy, hands down. A book that *definitely* played with my feelings, but was unforgettable nonetheless.

(read my review here!)

Memento (The Illuminae Files, #0.5)–Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Memento (The Illuminae Files, #0.5) by Amie Kaufman

I mean, it’s Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. At this point, it’s a given that it’ll be 5 stars for me.

Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything–Raquel Vasquez Gilliland

Amazon.com: Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything (9781534448636): Gilliland, Raquel Vasquez: Books

Another 5-star debut from a new-to-me author! This one is one of the best examples of a genre-bending novel out there.

(read my mini review here!)

Steal Like an Artist and Keep Going–Austin Kleon

Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative - Kindle edition by Kleon, Austin. Arts & Photography Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.
Keep Going: 10 Ways to Stay Creative in Good Times and Bad: Kleon, Austin: 9781523506644: Amazon.com: Books

Both of these books are essential if you’re a creative person, no matter your profession. I printed out one of the doodles from Keep Going and put it on my wall for motivation.

Are You Listening?–Tillie Walden

Amazon.com: Are You Listening? (9781250207562): Walden, Tillie, Walden, Tillie: Books

Two sapphics and an adorable white cat on a trippy, magical-realism road trip? Of course it’s 5 stars for me.

(read my mini review here!)

I love this part–Tillie Walden

I Love This Part: Hardcover Edition: Walden, Tillie: 9781910395325: Amazon.com: Books

I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but Tillie Walden is truly a master of her craft. This one made me feel all the feels in the span of only 68 pages…

(read my review here!)

Fargo: This is a True Story–Noah Hawley

Fargo: This Is a True Story: Hawley, Noah: 9781538731307: Amazon.com: Books

This was my most recent 5-star read, and probably the last of the year. But hey, it’s nearly 450 pages of behind the scenes goodness from my favorite show of all time. What’s not to love?

And thus concludes this year’s 5-star reads! As much of a trash fire that this year has been as a whole, at least we’ve had books like these to light our ways in the darkness, haven’t we?

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK! WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR 5-STAR READS OF THIS YEAR! HAVE YOU READ ANY OF MINE, AND WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THEM?

Since I’ve already posted once today, click here for today’s song.

That’s it for my 5-star reads of 2020! Have a wonderful rest of your day, and take care of yourselves!
