Book Review Tuesday (2/6/18)-Kat and Meg Conquer the World

Hey, everyone, and welcome to the first BRT of February 2018!

Pretty much the most boring month of the year. There’s Valentine’s Day, but that’s pretty much all that goes on. Plus, Valentine’s Day is basically for stuffing yourself with overly sweet chocolates and insincere, fill in the blank cards.

*Will Toledo voice* “I’m so sick of…fill in the blank…”

Aaaaaaanyway…

PLOT TWIST-I got the following book from an internship I had at my local bookstore. I got to pick out seven Advanced Reader Copies in exchange for a review of all of them. (The best part? If I didn’t like the book, all I had to write was “Would Not Recommend”!)

It seemed that this ARC had been in there a little while, as it came out last November, I believe. But anyway, it was the first really fantastic one that I came across. Enjoy my review!

Kat and Meg Conquer the World

Though Kat and Meg are both freshmen in the same high school, they couldn’t be more different. Kat just moved, and she’s introverted and suffers from an anxiety disorder. Meg is far more extroverted, but she has ADHD and her parents just divorced. But when they’re partnered for a science fair project, they discover that they have so much more in common than they thought-in particular, their shared love of the video game Legends of the Stone, and a YouTube star who plays it. Soon, they become immersed in their LotS-oriented project, but it soon takes them down roads they’ve both never traveled before-be it a LotS convention, boyfriends, and even the YouTube star himself.

Squee! Even if you’re not a gamer, you’ll have no trouble understanding or (thoroughly) enjoying this book. Very realistic, diverse characters, fast-paced and well written, and all around fun! (Also, the back of the book said that it’s perfect for “fans of Nicola Yoon’s ‘Everything, Everything’, which I adored, so that’s a plus.)

Thanks so much for reading, and have a great evening!

GUESS WHO’S BAAAAAACK? (This is Me from Now On)

That’s right, the octopus girl I mentioned a few months earlier has RETURNED! (See I Know You’re Sick of my Weird Mermaid-Like Things By Now, But…)

Oh, and did I mention, she has a name?

Pearl.

So anyway, I’m assuming you guys really want an explanation as to why the heck Neon Cheetah has been replaced as the header image.

As time went on since I first adopted the name and character, I started to realize that Neon Cheetah didn’t really…fit. I’m rather salty, introverted, and a bit reserved, and somehow, an anthropomorphized cheetah with rainbow spots and dyed hair didn’t quite match up. And I had started having more and more fun drawing Pearl in her various forms, that I thought that she might be better for me anyway.

So Neon Cheetah isn’t dead or anything, don’t worry. I just feel that I needed a bit of a change.

Also, the rainbow, leopard print background on here kinda hurt my eyes after a while. Yeesh. You couldn’t even see the home button.

So now, here are a few Pearl portraits I’ve done since her last blog appearance.

Pearl 2.jpg

Currently on my bulletin board. This is pretty much where she first had clearly visible gills.

The lyrics here are from Car Seat Headrest’s “America (Never Been)”. Beautiful song, if you haven’t heard it already.

Pearl 3.jpg

I might’ve been a little heavy-handed on the tilt shift on this one, but heck, I’m still proud of it.

I also ended up making a Christmas ornament of Pearl, as well as a bookmark with her on it, along with the Betty Smith quote, “The world was hers for the reading.” She’s also involved in another project I’m working on currently. That’s all I’ll disclose for the time being.

Until next time, everyone!

I would’ve put this on my sign for the Women’s March in Denver last Saturday (which, by the way, was SPECTACULAR), but I doubt anyone would’ve gotten it! So here’s Liz Sherman!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my geeky barrage of ink-pen! See you soon!

Book Review Tuesday (1/23/18)-What’s Left of Me

Hi there, everyone!

I’ve only started to really get back into the normal routine of checking out stacks of books at the library, browsing the Kindle library when I’m waiting for my holds, picking books up after school, etcetera. I read this particular book on my Kindle during the interim of finishing a stack of libary checkouts and waiting for my other holds. I must say, it was a very interesting concept.

Now, without further ado, here’s your review!

What’s Left of Me

Eva and Addie live in an alternate version of planet Earth, in which a small percentage of the population is born a “hybrid”-a person with two souls inhabiting one body. Usually, one soul overtakes the other in early childhood, but when that doesn’t happen, the hybrid is institutionalized. Eva and Addie are a hybrid-though they hid the fact that Addie’s soul had not really dominated Eva’s. But the unimaginable happens, and she along with Hally and Lissa, and Devon and Ryan, two hybrid siblings, are now stuck in a clinic, where their other soul will be “extracted” from their bodies. Will they find away out, and keep both souls intact?

Though I would’nt say it was the best book in the universe or anything, it had a very fascinating and inventive concept, very realistic characters, and a well-thought out world and future. All in all, not at all a bad book!

Now, before I go, I’ve got two things to tell you:

  1. Car Seat Headrest is re-releasing Twin Fantasy, (I’m listening to the “Cute Thing” re-release as we speak), and I’m considering doing a review of it.
  2. There’s a something of a drastic surprise coming your way very soon. All I’ll say is that it has something to do with the background change.

See you later, everyone!

My Top 5 Favorite Songs of 2017!!!

Hey there everyone!

We’re just a bit more than halfway through 2017, but already, we’ve gotten a lot of good music that’s come out! I just wanted to share my 5 2017 favorites so far. Enjoy!

1. “Half a Million”-The Shins

(This music video is crazy awesome. And I mean CRAZY awesome.)

I downloaded Heartworms (the new Shins album) the day it came out, and didn’t get to listening to this one for a while. Thus, I didn’t really care for it for a few months. Then, I actually got to listening to it, and man, I was SO happy! Super fun and upbeat, and with the classic, weird lyrics to match!

2. “New York”-St. Vincent

(Now THIS music video is just weird…but in the best way possible.😂)

I also got this the day it came out, being the first single from St. Vincent’s upcoming album (which I’ve been waiting something like 3 years for). Though it’s nowhere near as good as some of the content off of her last album, St. Vincent, it’s still a wonderful song. Squee!

3. “Put Your Money On Me”-Arcade Fire

(This one’s just a lyric video, but prepare to be blown away by the song!)

I discovered this one when my mom, brother and I were in the car listening to Everything Now (the new Arcade Fire album) on CD in the car. I was hooked the second it came on, with the opening melody that reminded me of spiders crawling up a wall, and beautiful lyrics. It reminded me a little of David Bowie, like something he might have produced on one of his later albums. Be-yoo-tee-ful!

4. “War Is Coming (If You Want It)”-Car Seat Headrest

https://carseatheadrest.bandcamp.com/track/war-is-coming-if-you-want-it

(This one’s just a Bandcamp link, but you can still listen to the song, of course.)

SQUEEEEEEEEEEECARSEATHEADRESTSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWILLTOLEDOISINCREDIBLYHOTOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Alrighty, I suppose there’s not much to say other than that….*ahem* Great song.

5. “Oh! You Pretty Things”-Lisa Hannigan

(This one’s just the album cover with the song in the background. Still, beautiful.)

As you may have noticed, this is, in fact, a David Bowie cover. One of my personal favorites! Lisa Hannigan did an AMAZING job covering it, making it simultaneously haunting and soothing. I’m currently listening to it on repeat, as that’s what I normally do when I download new songs. Also, according to my parents, it was in a show called Legion, which I haven’t seen, but I know it has something to do with the X-Men, which makes it even more perfect and fitting!

”Let me make it plain, gotta make way for the Homo superior…”

I hope you enjoyed this little insight into my musical taste, and enjoyed the songs as well! See you later! 😉

Fan arts, fan arts, everywhere

I’ve had quite a productive summer as far as fan arts go. In just about four months, I’ve filled up almost half of my sketchbook (OOPS). Maybe that’s just because I crank out drawings like a flippin’ machine, or maybe it’s because I had way too much time on my hands. But anyway, here are EVEN MORE fan arts for you to see! 😁
